The Farm Side of the Shore

Wander Editors · Haleiwa · Aug 24, 2026 · 2 min read

Behind the famous surf, the North Shore grows papayas, corn, and coffee, and the farm stands set the rental-cottage table.

The North Shore's fame breaks on its reefs, per its winter pieces in these pages, and its acreage mostly grows things, the old plantation lands behind Haleiwa running papaya groves and corn fields, coffee and cacao on the hillsides, shrimp in the aquaculture ponds up the coast, and a string of farm stands and market mornings that provision the shore's rental cottages better than any resort commissary in the islands. The farm side is the shore's quiet half, and the harvest here, this being latitude twenty-one, runs essentially all year.

The farm side is the shore's quiet half.

The circuit drives itself between beaches. The famous farms up the windward coast run their tours and their roadside counters, fruit picked that morning, smoothies engineered from it, and the garlic shrimp of the eating piece raised in the ponds out back, while the stands along the highway sell apple bananas, papayas, and the sweet local corn on the honor system that governs the shore's produce economy. The coffee and cacao operations on the old plantation slopes above town tour their orchards and roasteries, tastings included, and the Thursday farmers market in town gathers the whole harvest weekly.

The provisioning doctrine of these pages reaches its ideal form here, the rental cottage stocked in one stand-hopping hour, papayas for the dawn-patrol breakfasts, poke from the market, corn for the grill, and the shore's rhythm, surf check, beach, farm stand, cook, repeat, assembling itself around the groceries. The old sugar-town architecture of Haleiwa, per its pieces, was built by exactly this land, which the plate lunches never let you forget.

Build the farm circuit into any shore week, tour one operation properly, coffee or shrimp or fruit, and buy from the honor boxes with exact change and good faith. Eat a papaya with lime within sight of the ocean that made the postcard. The shore sells the world its waves, per every winter piece in this magazine, and feeds itself, contentedly, from the fields behind them, which is the balance the whole place runs on.
