The hunt country's fall glories are covered throughout these pages, and its spring is the insiders' season, April and May, when the point-to-point and steeplechase races run weekend after weekend across the great farms, the countryside goes impossibly green, and the tailgates come out of winter storage at a scale that constitutes the region's true opening ceremony. The run wants two or three nights and times itself to the race calendar, published each winter and worth building the trip around.

1

Start with a capital evening and leave early, since the whole proposition of the hunt country is that it begins forty minutes from the monuments and belongs to a different century. The Saturday races start early enough that the correct departure is with coffee, westbound, before the city wakes.

2

Base the first night in the courthouse town per its piece in these pages, using it as the gateway it has always been, and take the spring version of its pleasures, the gardens of the great estates at tulip and dogwood peak, the rail trail riding green, and the courthouse square at its April best.

3

Finish in the capital of the country for the race weekend itself, the point-to-points on the historic courses outside town, timber fences, tailgates ranging from folding chairs to candelabra, and the crowd, per the region's whole culture, equal parts overalls and pearls. The great cup races of late spring crown the season at the biggest courses and book the town solid under the standing festival rules. Between races, the village's piece in these pages applies in full, tack shops, stone walls, and the long green lanes at golden hour. The fall gets the color and the fame. The spring gets the racing and the green, and the regulars, as usual, have quietly chosen correctly.
